Cambridge Publishing Sits with Rev. Keith Purscell in an Exclusive Interview about his Faith, Religion and Facing the Unknown
"You're going to be caught off guard...But don't give up. Take this walk with God." - Interim Pastor Rev. Keith Purscell
MANKATO, MN, May 13, 2010 /Coaching - Mentoring PR News/ -- In philosophy and practice, in both his professional and personal lives, Keith Purscell has truly demonstrated himself to be a man of God. For more than 56 years, he has chosen to deliver the Christian message in local churches and congregations. And in retirement, he continues to see people through transitional phases and spiritual crises as a pastor with special training in Interim Ministry.
"The preaching that I do is really aimed at [congregations] in the midst of change," he confided during a sit-down interview with the editors of Cambridge Who's Who. As an Interim Pastor, Rev. Purscell acts as a temporary spiritual leader for churches as they transition from one permanent pastor to the next. "A lot of what I do," he continued, is to help them "look at their past, know where they are, know where they want to go and where they want to be."
In an environment where churchgoers may feel anxious about undergoing such a great change, Rev. Purscell is a great source of comfort, providing not just pastoral services, but also counseling those suffering from alcoholism and drug addictions and meeting the special needs of senior citizens and other groups requiring individualized attention. "The major responsibility that a person has in ministry," he noted, is "to really serve the people who are there—and in order to do that, you must know them...Learn what was happening in their life, how they got to where they are. This is true of the congregation, but also of the individuals [in it].
Rev. Purscell's emphasis on interpersonal relations within the spiritual community is reflected in his preaching style, as he often prefers to move among the pews during his sermon delivery in order to engage each and every churchgoer. This also allows him to properly understand their reactions, as well as field questions and thoughts. Such an exchange, he believes, adds a great dimension to the church experience—both the congregation's and his.
When Rev. Purscell is not serving as an interim pastor, he enjoys his retirement with photography, writing and traveling. He also offers his services as a guest speaker and consultant with a Master of Divinity from Phillips Theological Seminary and a Bachelor of Arts from Nebraska Christian College. An active member of his community, he has served as president of his local Block Nurse Program, maintains active affiliation with the Senior Citizen Board of Northwest Iowa and serves on the Personnel Committee of the Christian Church Disciples of Christ in the Upper Midwest. He is a published author and mentor for emerging professionals in the spiritual community. To the next generation of pastors, Rev. Purscell advises "Just prepare yourself for surprises, because you're going to be caught off guard on one side or the other, the positive or negative. But don't give up. Take this walk with God; let it be a walk with God." As for himself, Rev. Purscell intends to continue on his spiritual journey, forever in the presence of the Almighty.
