Jimmy Sio, MD Promotes Professional Development with Expanding Horizons

Dr. Jimmy Sio, bariatric specialist and professional consultant, discusses the meaning of success — and how to achieve it

BAKERSFIELD, CA, October 7, 2010 /Coaching - Mentoring PR News/ --Over the course of his prodigious career, Dr. Jimmy Sio has come to discover a few things about success. Number one: in order to truly help bariatric patients to overcome obesity, healthcare professionals must show unwavering compassion. This is the only means through which they will get to the root of their patients' emotional and physical problems. Number two: In a downturned economy, you'd better be willing to learn from your predecessors and adapt to a changing fiscal environment. Three: When you go into private business, you're not just selling a product. You're selling yourself — you're banking on the hope that your targeted consumer will take a leap of faith, invest in you, and repeat their business. These are lessons that Dr. Sio has learned in the last decade as both a medical physician and a business development connoisseur. Now, he promotes them through his consulting firm, Expanding Horizons. This past June, Cambridge Who's Who caught up with Dr. Sio to discuss his unique perspective on success and how it has enabled his clients to achieve personal and professional growth.

"The important thing in life is not where you started...not what you accomplished," he noted during his recent interview with Cambridge Publishing. "It's the journey. Before you get from [point] A to [point] B, step one to step two...you've developed as a person. You've become different, in terms of character. So persistency, at the end, will make you successful." This philosophy can be applied to a myriad of experiences, but the goals Dr. Sio specifically refers to in this instance are small-business development and individual, professional growth. And he promises that with Expanding Horizons, you will accomplish your goals.

Expanding Horizons is a consulting firm that offers a broad portfolio of services including personal development and team building, distribution networking, motivational speaking, sales and marketing. More specifically, Expanding Horizons networks with businesses to move goods, products and services through a series of processes. It offers coaching and training opportunities, as well as fosters networking between companies so that entrepreneurs can learn from each other. This is a process to which Dr. Sio refers as "equipping." "Certainly, it's a combination of things," he shared, "—a combination of learning from what other people have done and [then] going out to [gain] experience after equipping. Certainly, you don't want to [do] something that [other] people have already failed."

Additionally, Expanding Horizons offers marketing research services to help start-up businesses learn about the needs of their key targeted demographics. Gaining a comprehensive look into what your clients need, and addressing those needs, is vital to establishing a successful business. After all, Dr. Sio acknowledges, "Most businesses fail within the first five years." He continued, "Anybody can sell anything, move anything. But what is different [between successful and not successful companies]? It's the people! People are the drivers of the economy." If you can appeal to a large consumer audience, fulfill their needs and market yourself, you will find success in whatever you endeavor. Expanding Horizons promises to help the entrepreneur or executive to meet these requirements for as long as he or she seeks to develop and expand their professional capacities.

Dr. Sio believes that by helping individuals to become successful employees, small-business owners and executive officers, he can, in turn, help the economy. He noted, "For many years, the general population was not saving a lot of money because it was easy to obtain credit. Now that credit is down, people are wondering if they are going to have a job in the future. They are structuring themselves, which means you are going to see a lot of people who save a certain amount of their savings...If the consumer doesn't spend, the GDP does not go up...In order to be able to effectively influence communities, the nation, you need to...be involved in businesses that produce funds and revenues. How? We can employ people; we can expand our economy and, at the same time, become a more stable community and country."

Dr. Sio has led a varied career, rising to prominence in both the medical field and consultancy. A bariatric specialist, he holds an MD from Emory University and a Ph.D. from The University of Texas. In 2008, he was chosen by Cambridge Who's Who as its Professional of the Year in Consulting and, this year, he was selected to be featured in "Cambridge Publishing's Top 101 Industry Experts." Such an honor is reserved for only the leading professionals who have demonstrated innovation and expertise in their chosen fields of practice.
