Doris Amundson Arnold Named to Exclusive Membership Organization

Ms. Arnold helped start Hotline 4 Homework for Minneapolis and surrounding areas' children

    APPLE VALLEY, MN, August 26, 2009 /Coaching - Mentoring PR News/ -- Doris Amundson Arnold, Retired Teacher for the Minneapolis Public Schools, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for demonstrating dedication, leadership and excellence in education.

Ms. Arnold has 30 years of overall professional experience and retired in 2000. From 2000 to 2007 she also was a substitute teacher for the Minneapolis Public Schools. At the Minneapolis Public Schools, she taught math, social studies, reading, English, German and beginning Spanish to fourth through sixth grade students and helped children with learning difficulties. She served on the Language Committee for the Minneapolis Public Schools and also the City-Wide Advisory Committee for the Minneapolis Public Schools. She worked with a team of four teachers with alternating subjects each year. She taught in a unique paired school setting (Hale-Field schools) one of the first paired schools to help achieve integration in the Minneapolis Public Schools. Ms. Arnold wrote curriculum for teaching about the future used by the Minneapolis Public Schools teachers. She served on the City-Wide Advisory Committee for teaching Fire Prevention in the 5th grade curriculum. Within her school, she served as the head of many committees. She coordinated annual three day trips to conservation trips for the field students.

In the 1980's Ms. Arnold started writing poems to friends for various special occasions. She wrote to Susan Polis Schutz from Blue Mountain Arts, who was also a teacher. Ms. Arnold sent Susan Polis Schutz three of her poems which Blue Mountain Arts eventually used on cards, books and one also appeared on a calendar. After taking several classes on writing children's literature, Ms. Arnold has written two children's stories and is presently seeking a publisher.

Ms. Arnold also helped start the Hotline 4 Homework for children in the Minneapolis area. Hotline 4 Homework received grants from Channel 4 to fund the hotline program. USA Today featured an article about homework hotlines which included information from Ms. Arnold. She appeared on local TV programs promoting Hotline 4 Homework.

A lay shepherd for the Mount Olivet Luthern Church, Ms. Arnold is a member of the National Education Association, the Minnesota Education Association the American Swedish Institute and the University of Minnesota, Kerlan Collection, a place where original manuscripts of children's authors are stored for viewing for those interested. She is a lifetime member of the University of Minnesota Alumni Association, where she received her Master of Education in 1982 and her Bachelor of Science in Education in 1971. Ms. Arnold now volunteers to help immigrants learn English. She has done extensive traveling throughout the world and volunteers giving talks about her travels, including her trip to Northern Thailand to visit Hmong settlements.
